What is an MA dissertation / Thesis?

Writing a thesis or dissertation is a part of a university degree. In some Universities/Institutes writing a dissertation is the precondition of gaining an MA degree. Some Universities offer thesis/dissertation only to the brighter students and as optional. For writing an MA thesis/dissertation students usually choose an area/topic where there is already some research work. It is the credit of the students to add to their individual thoughts to the available knowledge/study that they explore. In fact, the objective of this dissertation course is to engage the students in activities that need intellectual inquiry, sharp argumentation and scholarship. The students must follow a systematic way and guidelines to complete their writings within a time framework. For completing an MA dissertation students usually get 4 to 6 months time. An MA dissertation is obviously a research work.......

The Essential Tagore edited by Fakrul Alam and Radha Chakravarty and published by Bisva-bharati in India and Harvard University Press in the USA is such a work, one that preserves the quintessence and master spirit of Rabindranath Tagore through the medium of English. This ambitious collection was brought out in 2011 to mark the 150th anniversary of Tagore's birth.

Communicative English, one of the major objectives of which is to emphasise on speaking skill, was introduced in the national curriculum more than a decade ago in order to enhance our students' overall skills, specially speaking skill, that were neglected in our curriculum since independence. But have we achieved any level of success and are we on the right track to achieve our objectives? The answer is a big "no."

If unrest, violence and session jam are synonymous with public universities, certificate selling is obviously so with some private universities. This conditional statement may be exaggerated but not absolutely wrong today as far as the general notion of both the categories is concerned.
